DDR5 RAM Will Double The Speed Of DDR4, Arriving In 2018

JEDEC has announced that the DDR5 RAM’s work is already under progress and is expected to be completed in 2018. This next generation of RAM is expected to bring twice the bandwidth and density. But, as processor and SoC-makers need to make appropriate changes, to use the DDR5 RAM in your PCs you’ll need to wait for a few more years.

JEDEC, a standards body for the microelectronics industry, has announced that the work of DDR5 RAM has already begun. DDR5 stands for Double Data Rate 5. The official announcement mentions that DDR5 will offer better performance and greater power efficiency.

Compared to the current DDR4 RAM, DDR5 computer chips will ship with double the bandwidth and density. The other improvements will be better channel efficiency and more user-friendly interface for client and server platforms.

So, when is DDR5 RAM arriving to our PCs? The answer to this question isn’t certain. While the DDR5 RAM standard will be finalized in 2018, it won’t be ready for OEMs until 2020.
In case of DDR4 RAM standard, which was finalized in 2012, it didn’t arrive on PCs until 2015. This is because all the processor and SoC-makers have to update themselves for supporting it.
JEDEC also said that as the DRAM capacity and bandwidth grows in demand, Hybrid DIMM technologies like NVDIMM-P will result in new memory solutions.
Companies like Intel are also working to create a RAM-free future with its attempt to build Optane drives, which can double as RAM.
